What
is "TLDs"?
TLDs is the acronym for "top level domain names",
.com, .net and .org are examples of top level domain names.

What's
new about the TLDs?
In November 2000, the domain name governing body, Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN) approved 7
new TLDs in addition to current .com, .net and .org TLDs.
They are .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name and
.pro. On May 11, 2001, ICANN signed agreements with
Neulevel and Afilia (the exclusive registries for .biz and .info
respectively). .biz and .info are the two of seven new
TLDs ready to launch.

The story behind the new TLDs
The web has seen an increase
in users and online retailers in the past years. Thousands of
domains names (.com, .org, .net) are registered each day. In order to
keep up with the growth and the dynamics of the world wide web,
ICANN announced on August 16, 2000 that it will bring forth new tlds
(top level domains) to accommodate the expanding world wide web. The new tlds are
said to become available for registration in the third quarter
of 2001.
